“During the Putin era, state propaganda has been pervasive. However, while in the past we saw more of the lighter shades, in recent years it has become evident that black propaganda has become predominant in the Russian information space.”
Curator’s note:
The artwork 3 shades of propaganda represents an artistic reinterpretation of propaganda theory in the context of contemporary events. It depicts three types of propaganda, each illustrating a different degree of distortion of reality: white propaganda, which provides more or less reliable information and is used to emphasise the superiority of certain ideas or ideologies (for example, to inflame national pride); grey propaganda, which involves the careful selection of arguments to influence people's emotions while concealing its source; and black propaganda, which disseminates deliberately false facts that benefit the instigator and demonise the enemy.
The three shades of propaganda—white, black, and grey—burn brightly against the backdrop of a desaturated, monochrome Russian flag, from which all life has departed.
