Uncle Vova Gifted an Ugly Childhood/Дядя Вова подарил уродливое детство
BY
Danya Baygoza
2024, hardboard, acrylic paints, colored pencils (copy of a digital work from 2022) 36 × 38 cm

The painting is a repetition of an earlier digital work by the artist, created in 2022, which replicated a motif from a photograph of a street in a Ukrainian city. In the well-known photograph, a toy — a stuffed horse — lies on the ground after a shelling. The artist is concerned with how the experience of war affects children. The artist's focus is not only on the tragic experiences of children in Ukraine but also on the younger generation in Russia during the ongoing war.

Danya Baygoza was born and raised in Saint Petersburg. He initially studied thermal network engineering before transitioning to painting. Since 2022, he has been participating in exhibitions with his CG works, paintings, and graphics. He currently lives in Georgia.

In his works, Danya seeks to intersect personal experience with significant societal events. The most important themes for the artist are historical and personal memory, and the theme of violence in the modern world.

He has participated in international exhibitions such as Dormitory - Exhibition (Saint Petersburg 2022), About Home (HomeGallery, Istanbul 2024), Shape of Loss (Revolution, Tbilisi 2024), and Sans Drapeau (Paris 2024).
