The history of contemporary Russia is being "written" with police clubs, or batons on the bodies of protesting Russians. Artem Loskutov, an artist from Novosibirsk, captures this "sign of the times" in his series of works, executed in a style he calls "Dubinopis" (derived from “dubina” – a police baton, and “pis” – script, as in ‘manuscript’)) which is essentially painting with a police baton.
"... All summer, I kept seeing these batons, used with astonishing ferocity to beat my fellow citizens. It was a powerful and unique impression that needed to be appropriately portrayed, using this special tool – the police baton."
